Desoto was born as a division of the Chrysler in 1928 to directly compete with such names as Oldsmobile, Buick, Studebaker and Hudson in the mid-priced market. Desoto went on to become a very successful brand for Chrysler which was manufactured from 1928-1961. First model year sales totaled 81,065 units setting a first- year sales record that was not broken until 1960. Remarkably, over two million vehicles were manufactured during Desotos long run. The Desoto logo featured a stylized image of the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto for which the car was named after. De Soto led the first European expedition deep into the territory of what is now the United States. Exploring territories which are now recognized as Florida, Georgia and Alabama.
