Gateway Classic Cars of Orlando is proud to offer this stretch custom 1968 Cadillac Coupe which started out as a 1968 Fleetwood Brougham. The year was 1972 when a custom body shop in Chicago, Illinois was approached by suburban resident and original owner about customizing his low mileage 68 Fleetwood with only 68,000 at the time. In the 1972 June issue of Playboy Magazine was a black, six-wheeled stretch Cadillac Coupe that he was inquiring about customizing his own Cadillac into. The designer and proprietor of the shop was a retired General Motors concept clay modeler and was enthusiastic about the project estimating that the cost to design and build the stretch coupe would cost around $32,000 ($153,195.57 in todays dollars). He agreed to the construction project understanding that it would take upwards three years to complete. Five years later in 1977, the second known Six Wheeled Cadillac Stretch Coupe was completed at the projected cost of $25,570 to the highest build standards retaining ALL original factory Cadillac components. The car has been driven only to car shows and special events. The custom red paint is the original color of the car and again painted to match the original color after the 1972 customization. The car was entered in 42 car shows from 1977 to 2013 and has remarkably never placed lower than 3rd place in Best in Show scoring 42 trophies in 42 entries. That very well may be a record!! The six chrome wheels are original to the 1972 customized build and are as spotless as the day they were purchased from Firestone dealership in Barrington, Illinois. While there are small, minute and barely noticeable imperfections in the paint after 40 years of ogling and caressing, the chrome implements, and the interior is in great shape and the car retains its overall good condition mechanically and aesthetically.
