It is also the most powerful version of the R107 chassis, sporting 237 bhp. Surprisingly the 500SL had more power than the later 560SL, which was a larger displacement engine but plagued by emissions equipment required by United States federal law. The 5 liter engine fires to life with a turn of the key and idles nice and smooth. The engine pulls very healthy, this is the most power you can get in this chassis! The 4 speed automatic transmission goes into gear easily and shifts smoothly and promptly.
