In 1977 Lincoln introduced the Lincoln Versailles into the midsized luxury market to compete directly with the Cadillac Seville. The Versailles was based off of the Ford Granada/Mercury Monarch and dressed it up with new front end styling grille quad headlights faux space tire trunk lid and forged aluminum wheels. The 1977 Versailles was also the first production vehicle to receive a clear coat paint job. Lincoln also performed a series of quality control tests on the car prior to them leaving the factory. These quality control tests included dynamometer testing of the engine/transmission a water spray test to pinpoint body leaks and a simulated road test which checked for squeaks and rattles so they could be tended to.
